CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., April 9, 2012 – The musical comedy “Young Frankenstein” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. April 22 in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall at Southeast Missouri State University’s River Campus.
Based on the Oscar-nominated smash hit 1974 film by the comic genius Mel Brooks, “Young Frankenstein” is the wickedly inspired re-imagining of the Mary Shelley literary classic. Earl and Margie Holland for whom the Earl and Margie Holland School of Visual and Performing Arts at Southeast is named, have selected “Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein” as their special choice event this season at the River Campus.
Directed and choreographed by Susan Stroman, a five-time Tony Award recipient, the musical will feature brand-new show-stopping numbers for the stage, including “Transylvania Mania,” “He Vas My Boyfriend” and “Puttin’ on the Ritz,” as well as old favorites from the classic film. This wickedly inspired re-imagining of the Frankenstein legend follows bright young Dr. Frankenstein (that’s Fronkensteen) as he attempts to create a monster – but not without scary and hilarious complications. The production won the 2008 Outer Critics Circle Award and the Broadway.com audience Award for Best Musical.
The “New York Post” has hailed “Young Frankensein” as “the Broadway musical at its dizziest, glitziest, and funniest. Brooks and Stroman pull out every stop with divine silliness and a touch of genius. Brooks’s lyrics are bright and witty. The scenery is delicious and the special effects are among the cleverest things ever seen on stage.”
