Southeast Missouri State University’s Department of Music presents the 11th Annual Percussion Ensemble’s Family Holiday Concert on Saturday, Dec. 8.

This family-fun entertainment will be presented in two productions and will take place in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall at Southeast’s River Campus. The first performance will start at 10:30 a.m. and the second will begin at 2 p.m. Admission is free, but a $1 donation for those age 6 and above is requested.

“I really enjoy choosing new repertoire and finding new and creative ways to include different guest artists each year,” said Dr. Shane Mizicko, professor of music and director of percussion ensemble, drum line and front ensemble.

Edge Aerial Arts Performance Youth Ensemble and Gabe Martinez, the worship pastor at Lynwood Baptist Church, are Cape Girardeau community members participating in the performance.

Southeast’s own musical theatre ensemble will join the percussion ensemble for a medley of beloved carols. The Southeast clarinet choir will perform a fun arrangement of “Deck the Halls,” and the saxophone ensemble will play it cool with “Santa Baby.” The percussion ensemble will play “Caliente Christmas” and “Noel,” “Sing Noel” before performing “Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24,” a Trans-Siberian Orchestra favorite, for the finale.

“In all, there will be more than 60 artists performing throughout the 50 minute performance,’” said Mizicko.

A slide show will be featured to add even more visual excitement to kid-favorites such as “Frosty the Snowman,” “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” and a “Polar Express” medley. Audience members can purchase egg shakers to play during select pieces. Kids are invited to participate in coloring activities before the show, and milk and cookies will be provided at the conclusion of the concert.

“The thing that makes this concert unique is that it is a professional quality performance that is geared for families with young children. It is a way to expose very young children to a professional concert experience without feeling the pressure of keeping complete silence during the concert. I work hard to achieve an entertaining concert program that includes both listening and visual components,” said Mizicko.
