Time to Change Your Password

The time has come.  Over the next few weeks, we will be asking each of you to change the password associated with your email/portal account. This request is part of a comprehensive security plan to improve our security controls on campus. Information Technology (IT) will notify you via an email message when we would like you to change your password. IT does not want everyone doing it at the same time. That said, if you feel you need to change your password, you can certainly do so at any time.

This initiative is about making our passwords stronger.  New passwords will need to be a minimum of 12 characters in length. They will still need to use three of the four character sets (upper case, lower case, numerals and special characters).

It has added spaces, “ “, to the allowed characters to help you create passwords which are more secure and easier to remember.  Spaces count as special characters.   For example, you might use the phrase Dogs like 2 rock and roll…  a random phrase that doesn’t include any personally identifiable information.

You can change your password by going to the Southeast Portal website. On the Login page, you will see a link to change your password. If you are already logged in to the Portal, you’ll need to select “sign out” in the upper right corner.

More information about this initiative with a tentative schedule, best practices and password requirements, and what to expect when you change your password can be found at

After you change your password, IT suggests you restart your computer. Otherwise you will start to get prompts from opened applications to sign-in. It’s annoying.  You will also want to reset the network connection on any mobile device (phone, tablet) using the campus wireless network. You can do this by going to the network settings on the device and telling the device to “Forget” the network.  At that point, you can reselect the network and login.

Worried that you might forget your new password?

  1. Choose a passphrase like the example above.  One that you can remember but doesn’t contain personally identifiable information.
  2. Don’t write it down!
  3. If you manage multiple passwords, use a Password Manager to store your passwords.  (see the information link above).
  4. IT has also developed a new password reset facility, so you can easily change your password if you forget it. This option requires you to have a cell phone or an alternate email address (IT suggests both) listed in Banner.  (See the information link above).

IT understands this seems like a painful process, but it is necessary and shouldn’t take you long at all. The hard part is thinking about a good password to use.

SUBMISSION INFORMATION: The Southeast Newswire is brought to you as a service of University Communications. The Newswire is distributed on Tuesdays and Fridays for the faculty and staff of Southeast Missouri State University. Individuals who would like to have announcements considered for inclusion in the Newswire should submit entries to by noon on Monday for Tuesday's Newswire and by noon on Thursday for Friday's Newswire. Submissions after these deadlines will be postponed until the next scheduled Newswire. Submissions should be kept to less than 125 words. Most items will only be published once, making the content fresh and the length manageable. Because items will not regularly be repeated, posts in previous editions can be accessed from an archive available at the bottom of the Newswire.
