Southeast Participating in Statewide Tornado Drill on Tuesday, March 6

As a part of Severe Weather Awareness Month in March, Southeast will participate in the 2018 Statewide Tornado Drill on Tuesday, March 6, at 10 a.m. In case of widespread severe weather, the drill will be postponed until Thursday, March 8, also at 10 a.m.  The drill will begin when initiated by the National Weather Service. Southeast will deploy its warning sirens along with an SE Alerts text message that points to safety tips and severe weather guidance.  Students, faculty and staff will receive an email on Monday, March 5, as a reminder of Tuesday's scheduled drill.   

Greek Week Blood Drive an Enormous Success

The Greek Week Blood Drive held this week at Southeast was the most successful in the history of this event. The drive netted 105 percent of its goal. According to the American Red Cross, 1,194 units of blood were collected, exceeding a goal set at 1,130 units. That equates to a possible 3,582 lives saved. The Red Cross reports that 248 more units were collected than in any drive in the past. Greek students also contributed 910 volunteer hours.

Empty Bowls Event March 4 to Raise Awareness of Food Insecurity 

The 12th Annual Empty Bowls event supporting the Salvation Army’s efforts to raise awareness of food insecurity locally will be held from noon to 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 4, at the Salvation Army Worship and Community Center, 701 Good Hope Street. Tickets for the event are $12 and can be purchased at the door. Participants receive a handmade pottery bowl of their choice and a made-from-scratch meal of salad, soup, rolls and dessert.

Continuing Education Now Accepting Class Proposals for Horizons 2018

Continuing Education's Horizons Summer Youth Program is accepting class proposals from Southeast faculty for the summer 2018 program. Horizons is held in June and July and offers a large variety of programs for children ages 5-14 years old. Classes that have been popular in the past include Making Things with Chemistry, Rock Climbing, From Crime Scenes to Corrections, Wheel-Thrown Pottery and Junior Veterinarian. Continuing Education is always looking for and open to new and exciting ideas. Classes typically run one week, with full days scheduled from 9 a.m.-4 p.m., and half days scheduled from 9 a.m.-noon or 1-4 p.m. Faculty receive a stipend for their Horizons’ instruction. The next Portrait Day is scheduled for 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Friday, March 9, in the Aleen Vogel Wehking Alumni Center Room 102 for faculty and staff members wishing to have a portrait-style photograph taken for departmental Web pages or other publications. Taiwan Study Abroad Opportunity Open to all Majors

Southeast's Department of Modern Languages, Anthropology and Geography is accepting applications from all majors for a 15-day faculty-led study abroad program to Taiwan May 14-30. Faculty and staff are asked to recommend this opportunity to their students who can earn three credits for the UI343 course. The program is led by Dr. Shu-Chuan Wang-McGrath. During the trip, students will experience traditional Chinese heritage, local Taiwanese and aboriginal cultures through visits to cultural villages, aboriginal towns, historical sites and independent explorations.
