Kent Library Celebrates Banned Books Week Sept. 23-29

In honor of Banned Books Week Sept. 23-29, Kent Library's monthly "Reading Recs" theme is Banned Books. Kent Library staff members have compiled a list of controversial books from the Kent Library collection, many of which been banned or challenged in libraries, colleges and schools in the United States. To learn about Kent Library's Banned Books list, click here. Every month, Kent Library’s staff and faculty release new "Reading Recs," a themed list of books and other materials from the library collection. All University students, faculty and staff can suggest  books for inclusion and future themes.

'Take-Away Friday' Returns Today with 'Sustainability Practices in Your Classroom and Beyond'

The "Take-Away Friday" series of faculty development workshops presents “Sustainability Practices in Your Classroom and Beyond” at noon Sept. 7 in the series' new location, the Jean Ann Whitaker Model Classroom in the EDvolution Center in the Mark F. Scully Building Room 209. This week, the Center for Scholarship in Teaching and Learning hosts Dr. Courtney Kisat, assistant professor of history and secondary social studies education program coordinator. Kisat will examine strategies for increasing awareness of and modeling sustainable practices in the classroom, including minimizing the use of paper, using digital materials, encouraging recycling and favoring natural light over artificial light. Human Resources Hosting Supervisor Trainings on New Staff Employee Performance Management System

Human Resources is hosting information trainings for supervisors and evaluators regarding the new Staff Employee Performance Management System Sept. 10 at 9 a.m. in the University Center Indian Room, Sept. 11 at 2 p.m. in the University Center Heritage Room, and Sept. 25 at 9 a.m. in the University Center Ballroom B. CSTL Launches Certificate in Culturally Responsive Teaching

The Center for Scholarship in Teaching and Learning has launched a Certificate in Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) for the 2018-2019 academic year. Participants must attend at least 12 clock-hours of professional development throughout the year. Topics covered will include cultural humility, what is equity, inclusive excellence, uncovering bias, micro aggressions and more as part of book studies, "Take Away Fridays," Faculty Development Day breakouts and other University workshops. After attending a session, participants must write a reflection on what they learned and how they think it impacts their teaching. The final assessment will be to create an action plan on how to pass along their new knowledge and applications to the University community.
