Vargas Updates Campus on Presidential Visit in Email, Portal Announcement

Dr. Carlos Vargas, president of Southeast Missouri State University, sent an email to faculty, staff and students Thursday, Nov. 1, with updates concerning the Nov. 5 visit by President Donald Trump to the Show Me Center. FY20 Budget, Health Insurance, Benefits, Recruitment and Retention Topics at President's Brown Bag Lunch Nov. 7

The President's Office will hold a Brown Bag Lunch at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 7, in Academic Hall Auditorium. Students, faculty and staff are invited to attend as President Vargas leads a discussion on the FY2020 budget timeline, heath insurance and benefits, and provides FY2019 and FY2020 recruitment and retention updates. Chartwells will provide brown bag lunches for $1. To order a brown bag lunch, contact Chartwells at christie.mcintosh@compass-usa.com or call ext. 2511 by 4 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5. Please designate the type of sandwich you would like — ham, turkey, roast beef or vegetarian. Chips, whole fruit, a cookie and a drink also will be provided. Attendees may also bring their own lunch.

Remote Desktop Connections Unavailable Nov. 5

On Monday, Nov. 5, remote desktop connections will be temporarily unavailable from 4 p.m. to midnight. During this time, no one will be able to remotely connect to any on-campus computer from off campus. Information Technology (IT) apologizes for any inconveniences this may cause. Southeast Student Veterans Organization Hosts 'Freedom 5K' Nov. 4

The Southeast Student Veterans Organization (SVO) invites the Southeast community to participate in the inaugural "Freedom 5K" race/walk on Sunday, Nov. 4. Registration will open at noon, and the race will start at 2 p.m. Participants should arrive by 1:30 p.m. to receive race information. Participants will have the option to run competitively or walk for leisure in an effort to raise awareness and show support for area veterans. Professional timing will be provided by the Cape Road Runners. The first 100 participants will receive a goody bag that includes a T-shirt, and preregistration at www.runreg.com/freedom-5k is encouraged. The goody bag and T-shirt are not guaranteed for participants that register in person. The race will begin and end at Southeast's Student Recreation Center. Call for Story Tips on December Graduate Spotlights

With the fall semester nearly complete and many of our students soon to be graduating, Southeast’s University Communications is seeking tips about graduating students with interesting stories to share on outstanding academic achievements, post-graduation jobs or continuing education plans, family members who may be graduating along with them or non-traditional graduates who have excelled. We are open to other ideas as well. Their stories will be featured on the University website and in social media as #AlwaysARedhawk spotlights, and will be distributed to regional media outlets. If you are aware of any students in your college or department who you would like to see featured, please submit a story tip here.

Construction Closing Old Sprigg Street Nov. 5

The Cape Girardeau Special Road District will close Old Sprigg Street on the south side of Lexington Avenue starting Monday, Nov. 5. The project consists of replacing the existing box culvert that is located approximately 100 feet south of the Old Sprigg and Lexington intersection. Completion of the project is expected in November, weather permitting.

Crisp Museum hosting Cape Mini-Comic Con Family Day Nov. 3

The Rosemary Berkel and Harry L. Crisp II Museum at Southeast Missouri State University’s River Campus will host a Cape Mini-Comic Con Family Day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Nov. 3. This free event includes vendors, a game room, cosplay, artists’ displays, a Youth Comic Character Drawing Contest, and is being held in partnership with Cape Comic Con. The Youth Comic Character Drawing Contest is open to youth ages 5-15. Today is the last day to pick up a contest entry page and details of the rules. Entry pages are due by noon, Nov. 3. Zarguski Earns Prestigious OVC Scholar-Athlete Award

Southeast Missouri track and field senior thrower Stephen Zargurski has been chosen to receive the prestigious Ohio Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Award for 2018-19, the conference announced Oct. 31. The award is the highest individual honor that can be earned by OVC student-athletes and is given annually to three men and three women student-athletes for their accomplishments in both the classroom and athletic arena, and because of their leadership qualities.
