Southeast's EcoPalooza Celebrates Earth Day April 24

EcoPalooza, sponsored by Southeast's Environment Science Association, will be held from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. April 24 on the Academic Terraces. This year's event will feature educational and guest organization tables, free food and giveaways, and a free raffle drawing for bamboo toothbrushes and stainless-steel straws. Giveaways will include reusable tote bags and reusable pre-filled aluminum water bottles. Thirteen organizations from Missouri and Southeast will host educational tables. A free yoga session will take place at 12:30 p.m. Participants must bring their own yoga mat. The Environmental Science Association will also be collecting used mascara wands (don’t have to be cleaned) and old dried out markers (can be any brand).

Southeast Scholarship Deadline Extended to May 1

Southeast Missouri State University has extended the deadline to May 1 for domestic freshmen to apply for the Copper Dome ($3,000 maximum) and Residence Life Leadership Award ($1,000) academic scholarships. The 2018-2019 Faculty and Staff Recognition Program will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, April 26, in the University Center Ballroom. The program honors retiring faculty and staff and those who have served the University for 10, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 years. The Center for Scholarship in Teaching and Learning completes its spring 2019 “Take-Away Friday” series of faculty development presentations at noon April 26 in the Jean Ann Whitaker Model Classroom in the EDvolution Center, Scully Room 209. For those couldn't make it to last semester's Faculty Book Study on "Everyday Antiracism: Getting Real About Race in School" edited by Mica Pollock, this session is a perfect opportunity to discuss some of the essays from the book. Dr. Tamara Zellars Buck Named CMA Vice President for Member Support

Dr. Tamara Zellars Buck, multimedia journalism coordinator in Southeast’s Department of Mass Media and faculty advisor to the Arrow, has been named the College Media Association's (CMA) vice president for member support. Buck earned the majority of votes during a special run-off election, which ended April 19. She will take office in October during the CMA's fall national convention.

Students Present Research at Missouri Speech-Language-Hearing Association's 2019 Convention

Eighteen graduate students, one undergraduate student and five faculty sponsors from Southeast's Department of Communication Disorders recently presented research projects at the Missouri Speech-Language-Hearing Association's 2019 Convention in Osage Beach, Missouri, April 4-7. The students' research project topics ranged from public awareness of speech-language pathology services in Guatemala, to the effects of social stories on behavior in children with autism spectrum disorder. Seventeen posters were presented during the meeting. Additionally, Jodi Niehoff, a second-year graduate student in the speech pathology program, earned an Outstanding Graduate Student Poster Presentation award for her study titled "Treating Broca’s Aphasia and Apraxia of Speech using PROMPT® Techniques." Niehoff was mentored by Misty Tilmon, instructor of communication disorders and clinical associate at Southeast.

Southeast Art Education Students Earn Honors at MAEA Spring Conference

The University's National Art Education Association Student Chapter recently participated in the Missouri Art Education Association's (MAEA) spring conference in  Kansas City, Missouri. Five students won awards in the Art Exhibit: Nick Jakubeck, Best in Show and was awarded a $1,000 scholarship; Gabriella Yurevich, first place in digital design; Nick Jakubeck, first place in printmaking; Jacey Donahue, third place in photography; and Erin Hardin, honorable mention in fibers.
