Dear Colleagues,

Over the past two years, faculty, staff and students across the University have been preparing for the Higher Learning Commission’s (HLC) Comprehensive Quality Review, and we are now in the home stretch as we look forward to the site visit on Sept. 23-24.

At the end of August, we received the results from the student opinion survey administered in April. The survey was intended to give all students an opportunity to participate in the accreditation process; 605 students responded and approximately 14% of those respondents provided comments.

As part of the Federal Compliance process, HLC invited third-party comments from community members, alumni and other stakeholders prior to the site visit. These comments were shared with us on Aug. 26. We received a total of 17 comments (for context, we received three comments in 2012).

We are finalizing the schedule for the Sept. 23-24 visit. The visit includes meetings with the Board of Regents and executive staff, focus areas determined by the review team, and open forum discussions, among others. We are also excited about two additional opportunities to showcase Southeast: the HLC Review Team will be taken on a driving tour, and each team member will have individual tours of various highlights across campus.

As you prepare for the HLC Review Team’s visit next week, we invite you to:

• Review the Systems Portfolio, Appraisal, and Quality Highlights Report at www.semo.edu/aqip.

• Review the Student Opinion Survey and the Third Party Comments posted on the portal under University Updates.

• Plan to participate in the Open Forum Sessions:

Sept 23, 2:30 p.m.: Resources, Planning, and Institutional Effectiveness, University Center Ballroom A/B

Sept 23, 3:30 p.m.: Teaching and Learning, University Center Ballroom A/B

Sept 24, 9 a.m.: Mission Integrity, University Center Ballroom A/B

• Reflect on how you support the Mission Statement:

Southeast Missouri State University provides student-centered education and experiential learning with a foundation of liberal arts and sciences, embracing a tradition of access, exceptional teaching, and commitment to student success that significantly contributes to the development of the region and beyond.

As you know, institutional accreditation from HLC is important for many reasons. It allows us to participate in federal financial student aid programs, it lends credibility to the institution in the recruitment of faculty and staff, and it validates the high quality of our operation and our programs. Thank you for supporting our institutional accreditation and continuous improvement initiatives and for contributing to our strong tradition of excellence at Southeast.
