Kent Library Athenaeum Presents 'A Crying Shame: County Poor Farms in Rural America'

The next Kent Library Athenauem Event will be held at noon on Sept. 28 in Sadie's Place at the Kent Library. Before the Social Security Act of 1935, no safety net existed for elderly or disabled people. Nearly every county in the U.S. used county farms as catch-all institutions to house the “undesirable” elements of society. Inmates at the farms were expected to earn their keep by performing whatever labor they could manage. Dr. Courtney Kisat will explore these themes with a focus on the Cape County Home for the Friendless. This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
