Jan. 25, 2008 – Zahir Ahmed, former director of international education with the State University of New York (SUNY) at Oneonta, has been named executive director of the Office of International Education and Services at Southeast Missouri State University.
He began his new duties at Southeast Jan. 14.
Before joining Southeast, Ahmed had served at SUNY since 2001, with the international student population doubling there the past four years. Prior to that, Ahmed was an immigration specialist with the Los Alamos National Laboratory in Los Alamos, N.M., coordinator of international projects with National American University in Rapid City, S.D., director of the International Center at the University of Michigan, director of international services and programs at the University of Dayton, and director of international student services at California State University. He also has served as a counselor with International Student Services at California State University, coordinator of Services to International Students and Scholars at the University of California Riverside and foreign student advisor at Southern Illinois University.
Ahmed holds a master of arts degree in counseling from California State University-Fresno and a bachelor of science degree in psychology from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville. He is a member of the National Association for Foreign Student Affairs: Association of International Educators.
“I am extremely pleased that we attracted someone with Mr. Ahmed’s extensive background and expertise in international programming to the position of Executive Director of the Office of International Education and Services,” said Dr. Gerald McDougall, dean of the Donald L. Harrison College of Business and University International Programs. “Further internationalizing Southeast Missouri State University is an institutional priority, understanding that Southeast graduates need to develop their global competencies if they are to succeed after they complete their University studies. Zahir will play a pivotal role in establishing programs and processes that will move us forward on this institutional priority and learning outcome.”
As executive director of the Office of International Education and Services at Southeast, Ahmed will be responsible for directing and participating in the operation of the Office of International Education and Services, including international student recruiting, international student services, international study abroad and exchange programming, and English language programs. The executive director also is charged with developing and implementing a comprehensive strategic plan to guide the enhanced internationalization of Southeast.
Ahmed will report to and advise McDougall on the future of initiatives concerning international student recruitment, international student programming, international faculty programming, outreach programming, information technology and communications at Southeast.
