CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Oct. 18, 2013 – “Andy Warhol Photographs: Recent Gifts from the Andy Warhol Photographic Legacy Program” will be on display Nov. 1 through Jan. 26 in the Rosemary Berkel and Harry L. Crisp II Museum at Southeast Missouri State University’s River Campus.
The public is invited to attend an opening reception from 4-8 p.m. Nov. 1. The exhibit was gifted to the Crisp Museum in 2011 by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.
Andy Warhol was one of the most influential artists of the 20th century and the first to coin the term, “15 minutes of fame.” His photographs, drawings, silkscreen, paintings, films and other works defined the Pop Art movement, and his work impacted or rubbed elbows with the worlds of music, acting, dance, fashion, media and celebrity.
The exhibition includes 93 Polaroid photographs and 50 gelatin silver prints taken by the Pop-Art master. Such celebrities as Martha Graham, Carly Simon, Liza Minnelli and Truman Capote are featured along with patrons, friends and anonymous models. Landscapes and interior settings, both rural and urban, are also included, revealing an aesthetic of the banal as well as the transcendental. The photographs provide valuable insight into the artist’s blurring of the distinction between “life” and “art” and his construct of “the celebrity.”
In conjunction with the exhibition, a series of collaborative events and talks are scheduled on the following dates. Details of each event can be found on the museum’s website or by contacting the phone number below.
