The 30th anniversary tour of “Annie” will include a performance Dec. 15 at Southeast’s River Campus.
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo.,
Dec. 1, 2009 – America’s most beloved musical, “Annie,” will charm audiences Dec. 15 at Southeast Missouri State University’s River Campus. The timeless tale of “little orphan Annie” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall located in the Cultural Arts Center.
“Annie” is back for its 30th anniversary tour, giving a whole new generation the chance to experience this classic musical about never giving up hope. Always an audience favorite, the Chicago Tribune calls the show “one of the best musicals ever.”
The show chronicles 11-year-old Annie’s hard-knock life at a New York City orphanage under the strict rule of the villainous director, Miss Hannigan. Annie is determined to find her parents, who left her with nothing but half of a silver locket and a written promise to return. Along the way, she becomes friends with Sandy, an abandoned mutt who becomes her constant companion, and wins the hearts of billionaire Oliver Warbucks and his staff. The heart-warming story of Annie, the little orphan full of spunk and grit who triumphs over all the challenges life throws her way, will leave audiences full of optimism about “Tomorrow.”
“One of the top musicals touring the country today, ‘Annie’ won’t disappoint,” said Bob Cerchio, assistant director of the River Campus. “You can share this experience with everyone in the family – from six to sixty! The show is wonderfully appealing and entertaining; it brings out the kid in all of us. This is the same company which performs in major cities everywhere, brought right here to Cape Girardeau.”
The original Broadway production of “Annie” won seven 1977 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Book and Score. It ran for 2,377 performances and has subsequently been produced all over the world. The original production is one of the top 20 longest running shows on Broadway, and “Annie” continues to be one of the most successful musicals ever.
Boasting one of Broadway’s most memorable scores, including “It’s the Hard-Knock Life,” “Easy Street,” “N.Y.C.,” and the ever-optimistic “Tomorrow,” you can bet your bottom dollar that “Annie” will bring a smile to your face.
