Continuing Education Hosting Eclipse Educator Webinar Series

Southeast's Office of Continuing Education invites the University and local community to join NASA Education for a virtual educator professional development three-part webinar series on the upcoming Aug. 21 total solar eclipse. The viewing groups, hosted by Dr. Peggy Hill, professor of physics, are geared towards K-12 educators, but everyone is welcome. Space is limited. To register or for more information, call (573) 986-6879. Participants will receive location information for each webinar when they register. Wednesday, April 19, 4-5 p.m.: The series will kick off with an hour-long live interactive program. NASA scientists and specialists from NASA Goddard Space Flight Center will share information about the Aug. 21 total solar eclipse. In addition, participants will receive a preview of the educational activities that will be shared during the grade level programs occurring the following week. Tuesday, April 25, 4-5 p.m.: Educators for grades K-6 will join colleagues for an education demonstration event on eclipse-related topics. NASA education specialists from NASA Goddard Space Flight Center will share developmentally appropriate hands-on activities with participants during an hour-long live interactive program. Activities will include 'The Eclipse Cereal Box Viewer' which is designed to use a KWL worksheet as a guided student activity to develop interest, curiosity, questions and knowledge about a solar eclipse. Participants will then create their own indirect eclipse viewer for safe viewing use during the partial phases of a solar eclipse. An additional activity will demonstrate the use of solar viewing glasses. Thursday, April 27, 4-5 p.m.: Educators for grades 7-12 will join colleagues for an education demonstration event on eclipse-related topics. NASA education specialists from NASA Goddard Space Flight Center will share developmentally appropriate hands-on activities with participants during an hour-long live interactive program. Activities will include 'Modeling Meaningful Eclipses' which is designed to use simple materials to create 3D models of the earth, moon and sun to demonstrate a solar eclipse. An additional activity will demonstrate the use of solar viewing glasses.
