Baffoni to Perform Faculty Clarinet Recital


River CampusCAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Jan. 22, 2013 – The Department of Music at Southeast Missouri State University will present Gabrielle Baffoni, clarinet, with Matt Yount, piano, at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 5 in the Robert F. and Gertrude L. Shuck Music Recital Hall at Southeast’s River Campus as part of the University’s Faculty and Guest Recitals series.

The performance will begin with “Adagio e Tarantella,” by Ernesto Cavallini, “Gra,” by Elliott Carter, and “Sonatina for Clarinet and Piano,” by Bohuslav Martinů. After an intermission, “Hillandale Waltzes,” by Victor Babin, will be performed, and “Sonata for Clarinet and Piano,” by Leonard Bernstein, will conclude the evening.

Baffoni is an instructor of clarinet and saxophone at Southeast; she joined the faculty in 2012. Her duties include applied clarinet and saxophone, chamber music, music appreciation and single reed techniques.

She has held teaching positions at Tabor College, the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) Conservatory of Music and Dance, and the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami. For two years, she taught band and chorus in the Groton-Dunstable Regional School District in Massachusetts.

Baffoni is originally from Johnston, R.I. She received her Bachelor of Music in Music Education from the University of New Hampshire and her Master of Music in Clarinet Performance from the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami. She earned her Doctor of Musical Arts in Clarinet Performance from the UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance, where her culminating project was a lecture recital focusing on music for clarinet and percussion duo.

With a passion for chamber music, Baffoni has performed with several woodwind quintets over the last 10 years, including the Liberace Winds Graduate Fellowship Wind Quintet at UMKC. She is committed to the commissioning and performance of new music for woodwinds, including works for woodwind quintet, clarinet choir, clarinet and percussion, and a piece for flute, clarinet and electronics. She has several projects in the works, including duos for clarinet and euphonium and a work for single reed choir.

As a clarinetist, Baffoni has performed with various ensembles throughout the United States. She has appeared as a soloist with ensembles at the University of New Hampshire, UMKC and Bethel College. She has performed regularly with such orchestras as the Miami City Ballet, Hollywood (Fla.) Philharmonic Orchestra, Boca Raton Symphonia, Kansas City Chamber Orchestra and Civic Opera Theatre of Kansas City. She is the second clarinetist with the Wichita Symphony Orchestra, a position she has held since 2008.
