Jan. 25, 2008 – Dr. Francisco Barrios, currently chair of the Department of Psychology at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas, has been named dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Southeast Missouri State University.
Barrios, who will begin his role as dean July 1, has experience both in academia and the private sector. He has served as professor and chair of the Department of Psychology at Texas State University since 2006. Prior to his position at Texas State, Barrios spent five years as a professor and chair of the Department of Psychology at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa, in addition to nearly two years as interim chair, 10 years as coordinator of graduate studies, and seven years an assistant and associate professor in the same department.
Barrios also previously served as coordinator of psychological services for the Pain Evaluation and Treatment Institute and a clinical assistant professor of psychiatry at the Pittsburgh School of Medicine; clinical/administrative director of the Spinal Pain Institute at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, Ill.; and assistant professor of psychiatry at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.
In addition, Barrios has years of experience as a consulting and clinical psychologist. He is a licensed psychologist in Illinois and Iowa, and a member of the American Psychological Association, Association for Psychological Science, Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies and Society of Behavioral Medicine. He has served on the Iowa State Board of Psychology Examiners, the Iowa State Department of Public Health Smoking Prevention Consortium and the American Lung Association of Iowa Smoking Cessation Subcommittee. Barrios also has authored numerous publications, presented workshops and lectured extensively to professional and medical communities.
Barrios holds a doctoral degree in clinical psychology and a master of arts degree in psychology from the University of Cincinnati. He earned his bachelor of arts degree in psychology from St. Louis University.
As dean of Southeast’s College of Liberal Arts, Barrios will provide academic, administrative and budgetary leadership to the College, which is comprised of the departments of Art, Communication, English, Foreign Languages and Anthropology, History, Music, Political Science, Philosophy and Religion, Psychology, and Theatre and Dance. The College of Liberal Arts also includes the nationally recognized Center for Faulkner Studies, Center for Regional History, Southeast Missouri Regional Museum, KRCU Southeast Public Radio station, KDMC student radio, the Capaha Arrow student newspaper and Channel 2 TV.
