CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Oct. 5, 2011 — The Tony Award- and Emmy Award-winning group Blast! is one of the most exciting phenomena ever to appear live on stage. Having performed all over the world, Blast! will bring its combination of brass, drums, intricate moves and unique music to the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall at Southeast Missouri State University’s River Campus on Wednesday, Oct. 19, at 7:30 p.m.
Blast! is a group of 35 brass and percussion performers brought together in a unique combination of music and theatre that includes classical, blues, rock ’n’ roll, jazz and techno-pop styles of music.
“Think of it as marching band on steroids,” said Bob Cerchio, River Campus’ assistant director, who describes Blast! as “almost indescribable.”
“Blast! is so unique that in 2002, a five-month Broadway run earned it the first-ever Tony Award for Special Theatrical Event–a category which had to be created because Blast! introduced a whole new genre of performance theatre,” Cerchio said. “Talk about trend-setting!”
With its origins stemming from traditional drum corps, Blast! has evolved into much more, bringing the staples of pageantry, showmanship, musical talent and kaleidoscopic athleticism to the stage with unique twists of movement and excitement.
R.J. Donovan of “ShowBiz” Boston writes, “Ireland gave us Riverdance, England produced Stomp. Now comes the American contribution to the music-in-motion movement. … Blast! is a joyous musical celebration.”
Julies Becker of the “Telegram and Gazette” wrote, “The dazzling spectacle appropriately titled “Blast!” … is picture perfect. … Blast! is a soaring takeoff to new frontiers of sight and sound.”
