Sept. 21, 2007 – Southeast Missouri State University will host a Breast Cancer Awareness Education Day on Oct. 1, an informational workshop that will focus on the prevention, assessment and treatment of breast cancer.

The workshop, which is free and open to the community, is co-sponsored by the Cape Girardeau Surgical Clinic and the American Cancer Society. The event includes information and discussion sessions with local breast-care experts on topics ranging from risk factors and prevention strategies to treatment options and providing support for women facing breast cancer.

“We are excited about this opportunity to partner with Cape Girardeau Surgical Clinic and the American Cancer Society as they continue to reach out to help individuals detect and fight breast cancer,” said Christy Mershon, assistant director of Southeast’s Office of Extended and Continuing Education. “Studies have long indicated that early detection is the best tool in the fight against this disease. If this event can impact even one life, then we have succeeded.”

Workshop sessions will include the “ABC’s of Breast Care,” taught by Debbie Sutherland, R.N., M.S.N., F.N.P. The session covers the basics of breast care as well as a question and answer session. “Treatment Options and New Technology” will be presented by Dr. John Moll, M.D., F.A.C.S., who is on staff at the Breast Care Center at the Cape Girardeau Surgical Clinic. “Touching the Technology” will include hands-on displays that give participants a first-hand look at the equipment used in breast care.

“Participants are welcome to come to one session or all of the sessions as their schedule permits,” Mershon said.

The American Cancer Society and a breast cancer boutique which specializes in prosthesis, wigs and stylish apparel for breast cancer sufferers will have booths at the event as well. Lunch will be provided, and participants are required to pre-register by Sept. 27 to attend the luncheon.

The Breast Cancer Awareness Education Day will be held in the Show Me Center from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Parking will be available in the Show Me Center lots. Although the event is free, pre-registration is encouraged. For more information or to pre-register, visit Southeast’s Continuing Education Web site at or call (573) 986-6879.
