Burris Wesener Named Director of Residence Life

Sept. 29, 2003 – Dr. Kelly Burris Wesener, assistant dean for housing and residential life at Hope College in Holland, Mich., has been named director of residence life at Southeast Missouri State University.

Burris Wesener replaces Jim Settle, who resigned recently to accept a position as director of residence life at Southwest Texas State University. Burris Wesener will begin her new duties at Southeast Nov. 3.

At Hope College, Burris Wesener has been responsible for all aspects of the residential life office, the student housing program and the campus judicial system. At Hope, she coordinated a 2,250 bed operation, which includes nine residence halls, seven apartment buildings and 64 houses. In addition to these duties, she served on the North Central Accreditation authorship committee; College Emergency Management Team; Campus Facilities, Safety and Security Committee; the Residential Life Committee of the Campus Governance Structure; and the Women’s Week Planning Committee.

She received the Presidents’ Award for Excellence and Dedication last year from the Great Lakes Association of College and University Housing Officers.

“Dr. Burris Wesener is an experienced residence life professional who has the capacity to build strong and lasting ties between students and the residence life staff,” said Debbie Below, director of enrollment management at Southeast. “We look forward to her joining us at Southeast.”

Burris Wesener has served at Hope for the past three years, where she also has been assistant dean for housing and residential life at Hope College. Prior to her tenure at Hope, she served as a residence manager at Indiana University, a residence life coordinator at Indiana University, a residence hall director at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, and a graduate residence hall director and a graduate assistant hall director at Western Illinois University.

She holds a doctoral degree in higher education from Indiana University, a master of science degree in college student personnel from Western Illinois University, and a bachelor of arts degree in communication from the University of WisconsinᾰStevens Point.

As the director of residence life at Southeast, Burris Wesener will be responsible for the direction and development of a comprehensive residence life department, including programs, services and facilities serving more than 2,500 students.

Burris Wesener’s appointment is effective, subject to final approval by the University’s Board of Regents at its next meeting.
