Southeast Missouri State University’s Catapult Creative House Student Studios will hold their October exhibition, “The First of All Pleasures Is Illusion,” on the First Friday on the month, Oct. 7, with a reception scheduled for 5-9 p.m.
The exhibition will feature the work of 11 Southeast Missouri State University Department of Art student artists and will be displayed at the Catapult Creative House, 612 Broadway in downtown Cape Girardeau. Through objects and ideas, the exhibition creates a dialog investigating the confluence of life and image.
Through the juxtaposition of text and image, student graphic designer Gabby Bernier explores our relationship to graphics-based communication. Her designs push beyond imagery and present the viewer with the consequences of actions.
Channeling fashion illustrations from the 1920s, digital artist Kim Wells’ deftly rendered images question the contemporary connections between appearance and identity. Through combining subtle hints of mark making and computer-generated identity, Wells’ figures are totems of modernity.
As part of a program to promote community based and integrated art making, each of these artists has been awarded studio space at Catapult Creative House. The exhibition will showcase a range of work from the individual artists that highlights their personal and professional artistic explorations as a part of the Southeast Missouri art community. These artists explore the physicality of the human condition, its relationship to nature, and the role of art in contemporary society. In addition to the exhibition, visitors are welcome to tour the studio spaces, view ongoing projects and engage with the artists.
In connection with the exhibition reception, the Catapult Creative House Student Studio artists and Catapult jewelry artists are proud to present their Studio Pop-Up Shop. This Pop-Up retail space offers visitors the opportunity to purchase one-of-a-kind prints, handmade jewelry, whimsical cards, ceramics, and additional unique works of art created by the participating artists.
