CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo.,
March 3, 2008 – The Department of Art is pleased to present “Pattie Chalmers: Ceramic Artist” March 7-28 in the River Campus Art Gallery in the Seminary Building at Southeast Missouri State University’s River Campus.
An opening reception for the exhibition is scheduled for 3 to 6 p.m. on Friday, March 7. Admission is free.
Chalmers creates narratives combining traditional fables like the Grimm Brothers’ stories with sources from popular culture. This synthesis results in a landscape of objects where uncommon things share space with more familiar inhabitants of a curio cabinet. Chalmers works primarily in clay, combining this material with fabric, wallpaper, flocking, Astroturf and wood.
Chalmers holds a master of fine arts degree in ceramics from the University of Minnesota, and a bachelor of fine arts degree in printmaking from the University of Manitoba. She is currently teaching ceramics courses as assistant professor of art at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale.
Chalmers also is the juror for the 2008 Annual Student Juried Art Exhibition, which will be on display April 4-25 in the River Campus Art Gallery. In conjunction with this exhibition, Chalmers will present an artist’s/juror’s lecture from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 26, in the River Campus Seminary Building, Room 257. The reception and artist’s lecture are free and open to the public.
