CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Sept. 10, 2014 – Children interested in musical theatre can study acting, singing, music and learn new performance skills this fall at Southeast Missouri State University’s River Campus in conjunction with its October production of “Hairspray.
The Children’s Theatre Workshop is for students in grades 2-7. Youngsters of all levels of experience are encouraged to attend. In each class, students will participate in theatre games and exercises with a final performance for friends and family at 11 a.m. on Nov. 15.
The classes will run from 9 a.m. to noon and will begin Oct. 18 and continue on Saturdays through Nov. 15. They will be held in the new acting and directing blackbox studio located in Room 114 of the new River Campus Center. Snacks will be provided.
“We are excited to offer children’s programming at the River Campus year-round,” said Rhonda Weller-Stilson, director of the Earl and Margie Holland School of Visual and Performing Arts and associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts; and the Earl and Margie Holland School of Visual and Performing Arts. “The Music Academy provides individual and group instruction for all ages in both voice and instrumental music throughout the academic year. Traditionally we have offered a summer arts academy and a summer theatre and dance academy as well. This upcoming children’s theatre workshop expands the theatre experience to the regular academic year.
“We piloted this program last winter with workshops centering on ‘Peter Pan.’ Because it was so successful and many parents have asked for this to continue, we are starting it up for fall,” she said. “Spring classes are also in the works. We are constantly looking for ways to reach out to our community. We feel this fills a need and we are very pleased to see this continue.”
The classes will be taught by Southeast alumni Megan Walton and Sami Gross, who have previously worked with the Summer Art Academy, Summer Arts Festival and other children’s workshops.
The workshop is sponsored by the Earl and Margie Holland School of Visual and Performing Arts.
Space is limited. The deadline to register is Oct. 11. The cost of the workshop is $150. To register, call (573) 651-2210 or register online at semo.edu/musicaltheatre.
