Celebrate the sounds of the holiday season with the “Big Band Christmas Jukebox,” presented by the Department of Music and The Jeanine Larson Dobbins Conservatory of Theatre and Dance on Nov. 13 and 14 at Southeast Missouri State University.
The performances will take place on the Academic Hall Auditorium stage at 7:30 p.m. Nov 13 and 14, and will feature performances from Southeast’s outstanding Jazz Studio band and Conservatory of Theatre and Dance students.
Big Band Christmas Jukebox will be hosted by two River Campus Elves, played by senior theatre students Josslyn Shaw and Rowan Van Horn, said Bart Williams, associate professor of theatre and dance.
The concert will feature big-band musical treats such as Duke Ellington’s “The Nutcracker Suite,” and a return visit by The River Campus Andrews Sisters, a close harmony singing group of the swing and boogie-woogie era, who will perform dynamic three-part harmony arrangements of classic carols.
There will also be a Big Band Christmas Jukebox first of mother and daughter theatre students, Ramona Bailey and Peighton Robinson performing a rendition of “Go Tell it on the Mountain,” as well as Thanksgiving and Channukah music.
This year’s concert will also feature a comedic re-imaging of the 12 Days of Christmas, which will imitate a Zoom call featuring members of the cast singing about their 12 Days of COVID-19 Christmas with gifts of masks, sanitizer, plexiglass, toilet paper and a washable Christmas tree.
Audiences can expect joy, celebration and a light-hearted introduction to the holidays, Williams said, as well as a Christmas jazz serenade on the steps of Academic Hall welcoming them into the space.
Face coverings will be required, and social distancing guidelines will be in place for audiences and the performers. Due to capacity limits, patrons are encouraged to reserve their seats early.
Tickets for the “Big Band Christmas Jukebox” are $22.25-24.25 at regular price, and may be purchased by contacting the River Campus Box Office, located in the Cultural Arts Center, 518 S. Fountain St., weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., by calling (573) 651-2265, or online at RiverCampus.org.
