CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo.,
May 10, 2010 – The Citizens Bank of Charleston, Mo., has provided a $2,000 gift to the Southeast Missouri University Foundation to establish the Citizens Bank of Charleston Restricted Scholarship through the Southeast Missouri University Foundation.
The scholarship will be awarded for the first time next fall to a student attending Southeast Missouri State University-Sikeston who is majoring in agriculture. A department scholarship committee at Southeast’s Sikeston campus will select the recipient.
In 1957, a group of businessmen and farmers felt a strong need for a local financial institution. The group raised $250,000 in capital, was granted a charter and opened for business as Citizens Bank of Charleston on Feb. 4, 1958.
Since then, the bank has steadily grown by staying focused on its customers and the community where they live. Today, Citizens Bank has assets of $101 million.
The bank remains at its original location at 207 E. Commercial St. The bank building has been expanded as growth has demanded it. The bank was completely remodeled in 2000. Citizens Bank of Charleston opened a branch at 722 N. Martin Street in East Prairie, Mo., in December 2006.
