Clark Terry/Phi Mu Alpha Jazz Festival Feb. 15 in Bedell Performance Hall


CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Feb. 5, 2008 — The Southeast Missouri State University Department of Music is proud to present the Clark Terry/Phi Mu Alpha Jazz Festival’s “Gala Jazz Concert” at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 15.

The guest artist for this concert will be the world renowned jazz guitarist, Wayne Goins. This performance will be held in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall in the Cultural Arts Center located on the River Campus.

The “Gala Jazz Concert” will feature both the Jazz Lab band and Southeast Missouri State University’s Studio Jazz band.  The bands will perform compositions by many famous jazz artists including Pat Metheny, Count Basie, Oliver Nelson, Toshiko Akioshi and Sammy Nestico. 

Guest artist Goins is an associate professor and director of jazz studies at Kansas State University. He completed his doctoral degree at Florida State University. He conducted jazz ensembles and taught guitar at Morehouse College, Emory University and Kennesaw State University in Atlanta, Ga.  He has written four books on jazz and recorded five jazz albums on Little Apple Records. Goins toured extensively throughout Europe for Ichiban Records, for whom he recorded more than 20 albums. He has had his music performed on film, including the soundtrack for the movie, “Roses,” and schedules a jazz series each semester at the Manhattan Arts Center for performances with students and invited guest artists.
