As part of the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) “Book Study Fall 2021” series of faculty development events, “Contemporary Young Adult Literature” begins Sept. 9 at 4 p.m. in Dempster Hall Room 102.
This study will be presented by Dr. Shawn Guiling, instructor of psychology, and will cover contemporary young adult literature in the perspective of Black young adult characters facing the harsh realities of culture and race.
Books in this study will include:
- “Ghost Boys” by Jewell Parker Rhodes;
- “I am Alfonso Jones” by Tony Medina;
- “Stamped (for kids) Racism, Antiracism, and You” by Jason Reynolds and Ibram X. Kendi; and
- “Dear Martin” by Nic Stone
Discussions will be held Sept. 9, 23 and 30, Oct. 28, and Nov. 11. The Nov. 11 meeting will be held in the EDvolution Center’s Whitaker Classroom.
