CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., March 6, 2013 — The Department of Mass Media at Southeast Missouri State University will sponsor its first Alumni Day Wednesday, March 27, featuring an Alumni Seminar with recent graduates focusing on their first job and first five years after graduation.
The event is scheduled for noon in Rose Theatre. The Alumni Day is sponsored by the department as part of the Herb and Peggy Taylor Endowment, a $90,000 endowed fund that provides scholarships for students and supports activities to bring students and alumni together to support career development, internships and other programs.
The Alumni Day seminar features recent graduates Amanda Bradham-Little, an event planner with Ces and Judy’s of St. Louis; Gabe Hartwig of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch; Dana Gordon, a communications professional with Isle Casino of Cape Girardeau; Toni Efftink, an account executive with Element 74 in Cape Girardeau; Trevor Morgan, an on-air radio personality in Columbia; and Matt Hickey, a videographer/web designer with the Antidote agency of St. Louis. Jim Riley, principal of Red Letter Communications in Cape Girardeau and organizer of the endowment fund, will emcee the event.
“We have top professionals coming in who recently sat where our students sit today. They have a lot of wisdom to share,” said Dr, Jack Zibluk, chair of the Department of Mass Media. “It really fits in with the spirit of the endowment fund: linking students to the profession.”
Alumni will be available to visit classes throughout the day as well, he said.
Many of the panelists will also be attending a meeting of the department’s Professional Advisory Committee later in the day. The meeting will help the department work on strategic planning and assessment.
“We want to hear from our professionals to help ensure we can provide the students with the best education possible and help us plan the future of our department as we adjust to a changing media landscape and market,” Zibluk said.
