Dr. Harold and Jeanine Hager of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, made a gift to establish the scholarship, which was matched through the Faculty/Staff component of the Honoring Tradition – Inspiring Success Comprehensive Campaign through the Southeast Missouri University Foundation.
The renewable Dr. Harold and Jeanine Hager Mathematics Scholarship will be awarded to a student enrolled at Southeast Missouri State University. The student must be in good academic standing with a minimum 3.0 grade point average. The scholarship will be awarded to an undergraduate or graduate major in the Department of Mathematics. Academic merit will be the prime consideration. The Department of Mathematics Scholarship Committee will select the recipient.
Dr. Harold Hager received his bachelor’s degree from Southeast in 1954, his master’s degree from the University of Missouri in 1955, and his doctoral degree from the then University of Missouri-Rolla (now the Missouri University of Science and Technology) in 1970. He joined the Southeast faculty in 1957 and became the chair of the Department of Mathematics in 1976. He served in that capacity until his retirement in 1995. He was very active in professional organizations and served on the Board of Governors of the Mathematical Association of America.
Jeanine Hager was active in the Faculty Dames for many years and served as its president on two occasions. She taught at Trinity Lutheran School in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Both of the Hagers have been long-time supporters of Southeast’s athletic teams.
