The Dr. William F. Ansberry Pre-Law Scholarship has been established through the Southeast Missouri University Foundation.
Family and friends of the late Dr. William F. Ansberry recently made gifts to establish the scholarship to honor Ansberry.
The scholarship will be awarded to a student who has demonstrated an intention to attend law school and who received a grade of B or better in Southeast’s Constitutional Law course. The recipient must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average. The Department of Political Science, Philosophy and Religion Scholarship Committee will select the recipient
The late Dr. William F. Ansberry, Southeast professor emeritus of political science, was a faculty member from 1967 to 1993. Though he taught a variety of courses for the political science program, his specialty area was the United States court systems. He spent considerable time in Kent Library reading every published opinion of the United States Supreme Court issued that year.
Ansberry’s favorite subject to teach was Constitutional Law, where his familiarity with current court opinions was especially valuable. He taught his students how to brief cases and present them to the other students in class. A considerable number of his students went on to law school, and quite a few returned for a visit and to express their gratitude for the background that he had helped provide them with. It gave him great satisfaction when some of those students told him that his class was the closest thing they experienced to law school as an undergraduate.
