CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo.,
Feb. 20, 2008 — As part of the continuing upgrading of recreational facilities at Southeast Missouri State University, the Department of Recreation Services has announced that the East Gymnasium of the Student Recreation Center (SRC) –North will be closed March 10 to May 1 for a complete floor replacement.
A new Mondo track and basketball surfaces will be installed in the facility with the addition of a water barrier as well, according to Troy Vaughn, director of Recreation Services at Southeast. The $600,000 project will improve the facility with a thicker and more durable surface on which to walk, jog, run and play.
The basketball courts, climbing wall and the indoor track will be out of service during this time. The West Gym will be available for informal basketball during most of the time the East Gym is closed. Patrons also need to be aware that locker room access from the East Gym may be limited at times. Lockers may be moved (depending on availability) to the Student Aquatic Center for those who have rented lockers in the main East Gymnasium locker room.
For walkers, the elevated track at the Student Recreation Center-South (SRC-South), 926 Bellevue, just southeast of Houck Stadium, will be available for use, Vaughn said. While this track is smaller, it can be accessed from the front of the SRC-South. Ample parking around the SRC-South is available to SRC members.
“While this is an inconvenience for many patrons, the end result will be something that will improve informal and programmatic use of the facility,” Vaughn said. Signage indicating the upcoming changes will be posted in the SRC-North this week, and alumni and community members will receive a letter via mail describing this work.
