CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Dec. 1, 2011 — Winners of Employee Recognition Awards were announced at Southeast Missouri State University’s Holiday Luncheon Nov. 23.
Winners were selected by the University’s Executive Team based on recommendations from an Employee Recognition Committee that solicited nominations from faculty, staff and students. Nominations also were accepted from members of organizations benefiting from the public service of University staff members.
The Employee Recognition Committee was formed in fall 2010 to establish the program and present the awards. This is the second year for the program. Dr. Sophia Scott, interim assistant to the president for equity and diversity issues, and Cynthia Paul, Human Resources coordinator, chair the committee.
The new Employee Recognition Program applauds the accomplishments of staff and team members. Awards were presented to staff members in each of the employee categories –Bargaining Unit, Clerical/Technical/Service, and Administrative/Professional. From these three categories, one individual was named Employee of the Year. A team award also was presented.
All regular full-time and part-time staff members, with the exception of the Executive Team and the Deans, were eligible to receive an award provided they were in good standing in the department and the University, and completed the probationary employment period. Employees may only be honored once every three years.
Employee Recognition Committee members were not eligible to nominate or to be nominated during their term of service to avoid possible conflict of interest.
Nominations for the team award could be submitted for an individual or a team consisting of two or more eligible employees. Self-nominations were not accepted.
All members of a team were required to meet the nomination eligibility requirements and were to demonstrate extraordinary service and the University’s values and strategic vision.
To receive an award, an individual or team must have achieved an extraordinary and significant accomplishment demonstrated by ongoing, sustained service or the completion of a special project or activity during the past Fiscal Year – from July 1, 2010, to June 30, 2011.
Employee of the Year Kim Fees, Assistant Director of Residence Life for Facilities and Operations Kim Fees, assistant director of Residence Life for facilities and operations, was named the Southeast Missouri State University Employee of the Year for 2011.
Fees was nominated under several of the strategic plan priorities, including Academics and Student Experiences, as well as People.
Fees began his Residence Life career at Southeast in 2002 as a graduate student working as a Resident Assistant in the Office of Residence Life. Due to his work ethic and his passion for Residence Life, Kim became a hall director in 2004 and was promoted to assistant director for facilities and operations in the Office of Residence Life in 2007.
Fees was nominated by Southeast hall directors Tara Beverly and Nichole Ciarlette. They say Fees is the “go to” guy, completely dedicated to students, his job and Southeast. Although Show Me Days are not in Fees’ official job description, he attends all of them and aids in the recruitment of future students. In his position, Kim is known to be willing to step in and use his skills to get the job done – whether it involves a flooding washing machine or chipping paint in a student’s room. Kim is committed to maintaining the facilities on campus year-round by doing everything in his power to keep the residence halls clean, safe and secure, Beverly and Ciarlette say.
Kim goes beyond his job description by helping Resident Assistants with social programs, constructing props from scratch for educational programs and placing recycling bins in every residence hall to help the residents “go green.” He also is known as the residence life “grill master” at various residence hall barbeques, according to his nominators
Fees is currently serving his second term as chair of the Professional Staff Council. He also serves on several other University committees, including Budget Review.
As the Employee of the Year, Fees received an engraved plaque and a $500 gift certificate for either Chartwells Redbucks or merchandise in Southeast Bookstore, or a combination of both. In addition, his photograph will be displayed on a Staff Recognition wall located in the University Center. Fees also was awarded a designated parking space for one year. The parking space will be the closest available space to his work location and will be designated with appropriate signage.
Team Award Facilities Management Moving Crew The University Teamwork award was presented to staff on the Facilities Management moving crew. Teams, consisting of two or more people, were required to demonstrate extraordinary service, the University’s values and strategic vision. Team projects were to reflect one or more of the University’s priorities: Academics and Student Experience, People, Communication, Funding and Infrastructure.
Members of the team are Marvin McBride, Ralph McDonald, Derek Eaves, Kenny Wallace, Allan Sample and Gerald Derossett. They were nominated by several across campus.
“Those of you who attended the annual State of the University event will recall that our theme for this year is ‘Building for the Future,’” said Kenneth W. Dobbins, president of Southeast Missouri State University. “As you know, we are in the midst of the largest building, remodeling and repair projects attempted since I became president. These award recipients today have played an integral role in preparing us for these massive projects. None of these projects would be possible were it not for the work that our team recipients have done over the past year.”
Dobbins said the Facilities Management moving crew has worked through “intense heat, pouring rain, and tropical humidity, tramped up and down thousands of stair steps, lifted and lugged” both large and small items. Their efforts support University Priority 1, Academics and Student Experience and Priority 5, Infrastructure, he said.
Dobbins said the moving crew worked around other people’s schedules, was helpful and professional. One of their nominators said they “work tirelessly until the job gets done. Their spirit is an inspiration to us all.”
Team members received a team photo, an individual certificate and will receive a luncheon at Wildwood in their honor. The team photograph will be displayed on the Staff Recognition Wall in the University Center.
Individual Awards Clerical/Technical/Service (CTS) Employee Recognition Award Jamie Mayfield, Department of Psychology Jaime Mayfield, administrative assistant in the Department of Psychology, received an Employee Recognition Award as a Clerical/Technical employee. Her nomination falls under two of the University priorities — Academic and Student Experience, and People.
Dr. Leslee Pollina, chair of the Department of Psychology, nominated Mayfield for the award, describing her as “a wonderful face to the world for our department and for the University. This nomination specifically recognizes her efforts in performing not only her regular duties, but also in her outstanding efforts to assist students.”
According to Pollina, Mayfield has received numerous comments and emails from students regarding her helpfulness and kindness to students.
“She contributes greatly to the quality of student experiences on campus,” Pollina wrote in her nomination.
Bargaining Unit Employee Recognition Award Marvin McBride, Facilities Management Support Service Staff Lead Marvin McBride, Facilities Management Support Service Staff lead, received an Employee Recognition Award as a Bargaining Unit representative. McBride also is a member of the Facilities Management moving crew receiving the team Employee Recognition Award. His nomination falls under two of the University Strategic Plan priorities — Priority 1, Academics and Student Experience, and Priority 5, Infrastructure.
Tom Lee, Facilities Management supervisor, nominated McBride for the award. McBride, who has been employed at Southeast since 1989, was instrumental in providing leadership for the moving crew, Lee said.
“Marvin has always taken pride in his work and in every assignment given to him,” Lee wrote. “He is committed to making each and every person he comes in contact with feel important and special. Each and every set up is important to Marvin, and he makes sure each customer gets exactly what they need to have a successful event. In addition to making sure we have outstanding and successful events, he also has made sure that the more than 22 moves initiated to date have been successful.”

In addition, seven more offices will be relocated before the start of the spring semester.
Professional Staff Award Jacob McCleland, KRCU Radio Host/Producer Jacob McCleland, host and producer on KRCU Radio, Southeast Missouri State University’s National Public Radio (NPR) station, was honored with an Employee Recognition Award representing the administration/professional staff. His nomination represents the University’s priority of communication.
Dan Woods, general manager of KRCU Radio, nominated McCleland for the award. In his nomination, Woods wrote, “Southeast Missouri State University is lucky to have many dedicated employees who work hard every day to fulfill the mission of the institution, but most of them probably do not report to work as early as 5 a.m. to get the job done.”
McCleland hosts the “Morning Edition” program on KRCU. His responsibilities include preparing news reports, scheduling interviews and overseeing the production of a variety of public affairs programs.
“He does all this, despite the early hours, with grace, enthusiasm and sheer competence, but more importantly, he has greatly enhanced the reputation of the station and our University – both in the region and nationally,” Woods said.
Recently, NPR asked McCleland to cover regional news events for their national audience. Most recently, he was the correspondent on a story in Carmi, Ill., about oil recovery even though Carmi is in the region served by the NPR station at Southern Illinois University.
“Jacob’s story became the most listened to story on NRP that day, garnering more than 20,000 hits on the NPR Web site,” Woods said.
McCleland also has spearheaded programs which have received recognition from the Missouri Broadcasters’ Association, garnering the station the equivalent of three state-level Emmys, the first such awards received by KRCU in its 20-year history.
