The Catapult Creative House Student Studios is holding its February Artist of the Month exhibition, titled “ag·gre·gate,” featuring the work of Southeast Missouri State University artist Michael Copeland.
The exhibition will run through Feb. 3 on the second floor of Catapult Creative House, 612 Broadway in downtown Cape Girardeau. A reception is schedule for 5-9 p.m. Feb. 2.
Kentucky-based artist Michael Copeland’s work pushes the boundaries of the traditional landscape. Aware of the seemingly subtle physical interactions people have on their surroundings, Copeland presents the viewer with a window into the delicate evidence of our daily experiences. The textural subtleties of his photographs emphasize that the overlooked moments of life are seemingly abstract and yet intimate journeys.
Outwardly, Copeland’s sculptures lack the narrative of the photos, and yet the raw nature of their materiality creates a conversation between image and object. The textures exposed on the sculptures are representative of the world in which they live. They are a dynamic representation of the subtle processes of the environment effecting change upon the work itself. Collectively, his work speaks to the evidence of our presence and the history of our interactions.
Each month and as a part of a program to promote community-based and integrated art making, a student artist is chosen to exhibit their work at Catapult Creative House’s Student Studio Gallery. These exhibitions showcase a range of work from individual artists that highlights their personal and professional artistic explorations as a part of the southeast Missouri art community. These artists explore the physicality of the human condition, its relationship to nature, and the role of art in contemporary society. In addition to the exhibition, attendees are welcome to tour the studio spaces, view ongoing projects and engage with the artists.
In connection with the exhibition reception, the Catapult Creative House Student Studio artists and Catapult jewelry artists are proud to present their Studio Pop-Up Shop on Feb. 2. The Pop-Up retail space will present the opportunity for visitors to purchase one-of-a-kind jewelry, cards, wearables, as well as ceramics and prints, all created by the participating artists. The Pop-Up Shop is located behind the Letter Press Studio on the first floor of Catapult Creative House.
