First National College Bus Tour Helps Students ‘Parachute’ into the Real World

Career-building program visits Southeast campus this fall

Sept. 1, 2005 – The Parachute College Program’s Parachute Express Bus will visit the Southeast Missouri State University campus on Sept. 9, as part of its first-ever nationwide tour.

The Parachute College Program, which is headquartered in Point Richmond, Calif., is a peer-driven program focused on helping college students transition successfully from college life to business life. A team of recent college graduates will visit 33 schools during the tour, including Southeast, Illinois State University, University of Missouri – St. Louis, University of Kansas, University of Pittsburgh, University of Massachusetts, University of Maryland, Rutgers University and University of Miami.

The Parachute Express Bus will offer presentations and activities to Southeast students from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the visitor lot located across Henderson Street from the Southeast Bookstore. The organization also will set up a canopy in front of Stroup Fountain to distribute information to students.

“Approximately 25 percent of students who graduate college each year are either unemployed or underemployed,” says Douglas Frazier, chief executive officer of Parachute. “We hope to reduce that number by providing a program that engages students, reduces their anxiety about the future, and builds their confidence so they can make a successful transition into business life.”

By partnering with campus career centers, the Parachute College Program provides additional resources to the centers at no cost. The Parachute College Program delivers its services to campuses nationwide via the Parachute Express Bus, a 40-foot, state-of-the-art RV/mobile office. Services include credit and personal finance workshops, advice on starting your own business, introduction to the job recruitment process, interviewing tips, business cards and much more.

The Parachute College Program currently has 133 partner schools and is poised to visit 50 schools by the end of the fall 2005-spring 2006 tour.

Inspired by Richard N. Bolles’ global best-selling job-hunting and career book “What Color is Your Parachute?,” Parachute is an organization focused on people in transition. Its professional network and in-depth resources give people the tools and resources to successfully manage their business and life. For more information on Parachute services, visit
