“Flow,” featuring sculptures by Southeast Missouri State University student artist Ashlyn Kinman, opens the Student Artist of the Month Spring 2021 exhibition season at Southeast’s Catapult Creative House.

The exhibition is currently on view on the second floor of Catapult Creative House and will remain on display through Feb. 5, with an exhibition reception that evening from 5-9 p.m. Face coverings will be required, and social distancing guidelines will be in place.

Kinman is a senior graphic design major from Olive Branch, Mississippi. While at Southeast, Kinman has discovered a passion for the multifaceted nature of sculpture. This medium has allowed Kinman to combine her interests in design and photography with the more tactile materials of traditional sculpture. Combining these mediums with an interest in women’s issues, she’s created “Flow,” an exhibition of work that explores the mental and physical burden of the menstrual cycle.

In a piece titled “Crimson Wave,” Kinman presents the viewer with yarn that unexpectedly bursts forth from a corporeal space only to quickly transition into a series of delicately weaved diamonds. Each of these shapes is ostensibly in sharp contrast with their plaster beginning, but the gentle weaving of yarn belies the seriousness of the questions the artist is asking — “Is this normal? Should I be feeling this way?” Kinman’s exhibition presents the opportunity for viewers to consider the pain, exhaustion and misunderstanding that women face.

As a part of a program to promote community-based and integrated art making, a student artist is chosen to exhibit his or her work at Catapult Creative House’s Student Studio Gallery each month. These exhibitions will showcase a range of work from individual artists that highlights their personal and professional artistic explorations as a part of the southeast Missouri art community. These artists explore the physicality of the human condition, its relationship to nature, and the role of art in contemporary society. In addition to the exhibition, attendees are welcome to tour the studio spaces, view ongoing projects and engage with the artists.

Catapult Creative House is located at 612 Broadway in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Hours of operation are from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. All gallery exhibitions, events and talks are free and open to the public.
