CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Feb. 3, 2014 – “Fancy That!,” a sale of gently used formal dresses and accessories, is scheduled for Feb. 15-16 at Southeast Missouri State University.
Campus Life and Event Services and Gamma Sigma Sigma service sorority are sponsoring the event to benefit Dreams 2 Reality in Sikeston, Mo., and the Safe House for Women.
The sale will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 15 and 1 to 7 p.m. Feb. 16 in the University Center Redhawks Room. Dresses and accessories will be sold at a reduced rate.
Joanna Shaver, coordinator of Campus Programming, said her inspiration for this event came from the Cinderella Project in St. Louis.
“I want anyone to feel like they can afford formal wear for whatever type of event they have – prom, a wedding, a future homecoming,” Shaver said.
“There are no tickets; it will be just like a boutique but in the University Center,” she said. “This will be the trial year to see how many dresses we collect and how large the turnout will be. I do hope that it’s something we can continue each year.”
She said she plans to ask local high school counselors to refer students who may not be able to afford a dress to receive a “free dress” voucher. Vouchers will be limited.
