CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo.,
Dec. 10, 2009 – The Southeast Missouri State University Department of Music presents Engelbert Humperdinck’s opera, “Hansel and Gretel,” Jan.22–24 in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall at the River Campus.
The performance at noon Jan. 22 will be a private showing for local schools. The opera will be fully staged for the public at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 23 and at 3 p.m. Jan. 24. The opera, approximately 80 minutes long, is a full-stage production and features a chamber orchestra.
In addition to 14 Department of Music students who have been rehearsing since September in the Opera Theatre Workshop class, the cast will include seven students from local schools who auditioned for the opera on Dec. 7. These students, who are currently studying voice at the Southeast Missouri Music Academy with teachers Kaylyn Kinder, Mary Mims and Lori Shaffer, were taught a portion of the music from the show at the audition and performed the selection with movement from memory at the end of the audition.
Show conductor Dr. Timothy Schmidt and vocal coach Dr. Leslie Jones said they were very impressed with the enthusiasm and quick music skills of these students.
Students who were selected are Michaila Fleming of St. Vincent de Paul School in Cape Girardeau, Timothy Heinsman of Cape Central High School, Lauren Hunt of Woodland Middle School, Nia Johnson of Cape Middle School, Levi Kempf of Jackson Middle School, Lydia Moyers of Guardian Angel School in Oran, Mo., and Ryan Settle of Immaculate Conception in Jackson, Mo.
“We are very pleased to welcome these seven very talented Southeast Missouri Music Academy voice students into our cast,” said Christopher Goeke, chair of the Department of Music and director for the opera. “They all did a great audition and will be a wonderful addition to our show.”
