“If/Then,” an exhibit of woodwork installations, will be on display in the Gallery at Southeast Missouri State University’s Catapult Creative House during a First Friday reception from 5-9 p.m. Feb. 1 during its First Friday reception.
The exhibition will feature the work of artist Sarah Martin and will remain on display through March 29. An artist talk is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 31, at 7 p.m. in the Catapult Creative House Classroom.
Her artwork, which consists of woodwork installations encased in traditional in-the-round framing, focuses on the aesthetics of the natural world and the meaning of symbolic interpretation, said Martin.
“‘If/Then’ explores the desire for meaning in the random and the structures by which we create that meaning,” she said. “Using the framework of natural history museums, botanical specimens are re-contextualized and interpreted based on their physical characteristics.”
Martin discovered her love of woodworking in 1998 as a student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts. She earned a Master of Fine Arts in woodworking from the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth. She has completed residencies at San Diego State University and Penland School of Craft, as has taught at many universities and craft schools around the country. Martin currently is an assistant professor and area head of woodworking at Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky.
A second reception is scheduled for March 1 from 5-9 p.m. in the Catapult Creative House Gallery.
During the open receptions, visitors are welcome to tour the entire Catapult facilities including the Southeast Missouri State University Department of Art students’ studios upstairs, as well as the Catapult Creative Shoppe, which features both student work and local business products.
