Over the last few days, the University has experienced a surge in email phishing attacks asking students and employees to renew their Southeast account. In addition, a new variant of ransomware (like the WannaCry outbreak) is currently infecting systems across the world.
The first wants to steal your login information; the second wants to encrypt your computer; and both start with a simple email message asking you to click a link, login to a site or open a document.
What can you do?
- Be careful and skeptical. Southeast will never send you an email asking you to verify your password or to confirm your account.
- If you don’t know what’s in a document or why you received it, don’t open it.
- Contact the Information Technology (IT) Help Desk at (573) 651-4357 and ask about a suspicious email message.
If you inadvertently give away your login information, your account will most likely be used to send even more phishing emails. If this happens, IT will randomize your password and you won’t be able to login until you reset your password.
You can reset your password at https://app.semo.edu/sekey/reset.asp. This utility uses an alternate email address or a cell phone number to verify your identity. You may want to update your personal contact information in Banner via the portal (http:portal.semo.edu) on the Employee or Student “SS” tabs in the Personal Information box.
