CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Nov. 26, 2012 – The Southeast Missouri State University Department of Music’s highly acclaimed jazz ensembles will present their annual holiday performance Nov. 30 at Buckner Brewing Company in downtown Cape Girardeau. Buckner’s will host the Jazz Lab and the Studio Jazz ensembles from 7-10 p.m. The performance is free.
Southeast’s premier big band, the Studio Jazz Ensemble, returns to Buckner’s playing some of their favorite tunes of the past semester. Their holiday performance will take place at 7:30 p.m. and include many holiday favorites as arranged for big band such as “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen,” “The Christmas Song,” “Let It Snow,” “Winter Wonderland” and many more. This band will also play a late set (9 p.m.) which will feature music for the big band which traditionally includes saxophones, trumpets, trombones and rhythm section. Featured students include Spencer Day (tenor sax), Matt Gates (trombone), Kyle Clay (bass) and Trevor Smith (alto sax). Also featured will be Marie Meunier on jazz vocals.
Jazz Lab Band
The University’s Jazz Lab Band will perform at 8 p.m. and is comprised of both music and non-music majors. They will be playing a variety of jazz compositions including “Children of Sanchez,” “A Christmas Medley,” “Salt Peanuts,” “Under the Mistletooth,” and “You Too.” Their portion of the program will be quite exciting as well with solos by Sam Harris (alto sax), Steven Watkins (tenor sax) and Adam Devine (trombone).
