Jazz Series to Present Final Concert Performance: “Swing, Swang, Swung” Featuring Guest Artist Dan Jordan



April 7, 2010– Southeast Missouri State University’s Department of Music will present their final concert of the 2009-2010 Jazz Series featuring Dan Jordan at 7:30 p.m. April 23 in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall in the Cultural Arts Center at Southeast’s River Campus.

Jordan is the former sideman for Maynard Ferguson, Arturo Sandoval, Barry Manilow, Natalie Cole, Aretha Franklin, Clark Terry, Sammy Davis Jr. Ray Charles and many more. The concert will feature music for the big band which traditionally includes saxophones, trumpets, trombones and rhythm section.  

Dan Jordan, Tenor Sax & Flute

Dan Jordan has been a successful educator and musician since 1976.  He has taught music in Orlando, Fla., at Rollins College and several community colleges in Orlando and New York City.  He created “Journey through Jazz,” a nationally distributed video intended to help teach young musicians about the art form of jazz music.  He has played alongside many jazz greats.  He has appeared on television on “The David Letterman Show” and “Siskel and Ebert Show,” among others.  

Studio Jazz Ensemble

The Studio Jazz Ensemble electrified the audience at its Jazz Festival Gala Concert and left many remarking, “that was the best concert I’ve ever attended!”   Sam Blackwell, advisor to The Arrow and contributor to the Southeast Missourian, reviewed this ensemble after its October 2009 concert and remarked that “the Studio Jazz Band …simply astonished!”.  Studio Jazz toured the St. Louis area in late February to many rave reviews as well.   Among the tunes on their set will be “My Man Bill” from “Carousel,” “Runaway Hormones” by Rob McConnell, “Red Clay” by Freddie Hubbard and more.  Many students will be featured soloists including Spencer Day of Ballwin, Mo., on tenor sax, Nate Nall of Cape Girardeau on trumpet, Jarred Harris of Cape Girardeau on bass, Geoff Huff of Granite City, Ill., on alto sax and Brandon Harvey of Florissant, Mo., on drumset. 

Jazz Lab Band

Also performing at the concert will be the Southeast University’s Jazz Lab Band who will perform with Jordan as soloist. This ensemble will be directed by Southeast alumnus Joseph Pappas and is comprised of both music and non-music majors.   They will be playing a variety of jazz compositions.
