CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo.,
March 18, 2011 – The Rosemary Berkel and Harry L. Crisp II Museum at Southeast Missouri State University’s River Campus will host the Department of Art’s Annual Juried Student Exhibition opening April 1.
The public is invited to attend the opening reception for the artists from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 1. The event is free. Refreshments will be served. Awards will be presented in the following categories: 2D Color/Design Foundations, 3D Foundations, Graphic Design/Illustration, Digital Arts, Ceramics, Fibers, Printmaking, Painting, Drawing and New Genre. Best in Show, Distinguished Merit Award, Area Merit Award and Purchase Awards also will be presented.
This is a significant show for Southeast students, showcasing selected works that have been created within the past year. Many of the works on view will be available for purchase.
This years’ juror, Alex Lopez, has a master of fine arts degree in studio arts from Alfred University, New York, and a bachelor of fine arts degree in studio arts from the University of Texas at San Antonio. He currently teaches sculpture courses at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.
Lopez’s work is diverse, ranging from objects and videos to installations. His approach is that of scientist and anthropologist, observing, evaluating, experimenting and mapping spectacular moments and events. His work has been exhibited in 35 shows including several solo exhibitions. Such spaces include, Hudson Show Room at Artpace; San Antonio Museum of Art; McNay Art Museum, Texas; University of North Texas, Denton; Blanton Museum of Art; Arthouse at the Jones Center, Austin, Texas; Robert Turner Gallery, Alfred, New York; and Christie’s, New York. He has been included in several catalogs and has also been reviewed in Art In America, Artlies, and Art Papers. He has had collaborative projects published in Perla magazine.
The exhibit will remain on display through May 1.
The museum is located in the Cultural Arts Center at the River Campus, located at 518 S. Fountain Street in Cape Girardeau. Museum hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday and noon to 4 p.m. on weekends.
