‘Know Local, Buy Local, Eat Local’ Focus of Ag Entrepreneurship Program

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Nov. 3, 2010 – The Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE) at Southeast Missouri State University will celebrate agricultural entrepreneurship Nov. 16 with a special program as a part of Global Entrepreneurship Week.

“Know Local, Buy Local, Eat Local” is a workshop to be offered from 8:45-11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16, in the 4-H Building on the SEMO District Fairgrounds.

The Know Local, Buy Local, Eat Local program will feature local producers and resource providers. Presenters will discuss innovative marketing strategies for small growers, organic producers and agri-tourism destinations. Jones Heritage Farms will cater a local foods breakfast to kick off the morning. Heritage Farms owner Gerry Jones will share the story of how he developed his unique business model.

Dr. James Stapleton, executive director of the CIE says, “The Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship believes that agriculture entrepreneurship needs to be given greater recognition as a means to revitalize rural America. That’s why we have partnered with others to provide this workshop to assist family farmers with developing new market strategies to take advantage of increased demand for locally grown natural foods.”

Under the guidance of Dr. Stapleton, Southeast Missouri State University is in its third year of hosting Global Entrepreneurship Week on campus. Global Entrepreneurship Week is an annual event that connects people everywhere through local, national and global activities designed to help them explore their potential as self-starters and innovators.

This part of the week’s celebration is being co-sponsored by the CIE, the Southeast Missouri State University Department of Agriculture, Agri-Missouri, the Missouri Department of Agriculture, and the University of Missouri Extension. Sponsors will provide door prizes and recipes for using local food products.

The Know Local, Buy Local, Eat Local workshop is free, but seating is limited and registration in advance is required. Log onto www.semo.edu/localag or call (573) 651-2929 for more information and to register.
