Mary Ann Valle Keeney Memorial Endowed Scholarship Established at Southeast

studying outdoorsCAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Feb. 25, 2016 – The Mary Ann Valle Keeney Memorial Scholarship has been established through the Southeast Missouri University Foundation.

Dr. Ronald E. Keeney of Raleigh, North Carolina, made a gift to establish the scholarship in memory of his late wife, Mary Ann Valle Keeney. Dr. Keeney said he hopes the scholarship inspires women to build a productive and independent future by pursuing a higher education degree. He said he also hopes the scholarship recognizes the importance mentors play in supporting and achieving students’ educational goals as did Mary Brim Scott, a southeast Missouri native who provided him constant encouragement to persist in pursuit of his educational goals.

The renewable Mary Ann Valle Keeney Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a student at Southeast Missouri State University with a minimum 3.0 grade point average. The scholarship will be awarded to a U.S. citizen that demonstrates financial need. First preference will be given to female students.

Dr. Keeney is a 1964 alumnus of Southeast. Mrs. Keeney attended Southeast before her marriage to Dr. Keeney, at which time she went to work to help finance his further education. Together, they launched a career in pharmaceutical medicine with Dr. Keeney working outside their home and Mrs. Keeney keeping the home base stable during his many travels. Dr. Keeney put his Southeast education to use, pursuing further higher education in medical school, pediatric infectious diseases training and clinical research activities. This work gave the world its first safe and effective drugs for treating viral infections caused by herpes simplex, varicella zoster, HIV, influenza virus and respiratory syncytial virus. Mrs. Keeney passed away in 2013 and will be remembered as a loving wife, sister, mother, grandmother, dedicated friend, champion of education, woman of civic duty and social consciousness, proud patriot and generous supporter of people and principles that were dear to her.
