CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Oct. 7, 2014 — St. Louis Cardinals Manager Mike Matheny will be the keynote speaker next month for the first annual Arrow Leadership and Success Summit. The Arrow, Southeast Missouri State University’s student newspaper, is run in partnership with Rust Communications.
The summit will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 17, in the Show Me Center. The presentation is part of the Arrow Leadership and Success Series, a 20-week series of interviews with leaders and individuals with success stories. Matheney’s appearance is presented by Saint Francis Medical Center.
The summit is an opportunity for students and others to hear from a successful leader about what is takes to lead winning teams and organizations.
“It is important to recognize those who have become leaders in their profession and communities, especially those who attended Southeast Missouri State University,” said Steven Bjelich, president and chief executive officer of Saint Francis Medical Center. “They set an example for people of this region to achieve greater heights both personally and professionally. At Saint Francis Medical Center, we set an example of the highest standard of healthcare, and it is only fitting that the Medical Center and its professionals partner with the Arrow Leadership and Success Series.”
Mike Matheny is the 49th manager in the St. Louis Cardinals’ history. He recently finished his third regular season as manager, taking the team to the playoffs in each year. He led the Cardinals to the World Series in 2013, falling two games short of a 12th World Series title in Cardinals history.
Before becoming a manager, he worked as a special assistant in player development for the Cardinals.
A Rawlings Gold Glove winning catcher four times, Matheny’s playing career spanned 13 years and four teams. He is most known by Cardinals fans as the team’s catcher from 2000-2004. During this time, he appeared in 611 games at the position and caught 4,938.1 innings. He made only 14 errors during the span.
Off the field, Matheny started the “Catch-22 Foundation.” The organization funded the “Catch 22 Miracle Field” at Chesterfield Valley Athletic Complex. The field was designed to allow all children, including those with physical and mental disabilities, the opportunity to play baseball.
Mike and his wife, Kristin, reside in St. Louis and have five children.
“Every good organization needs strong leadership,” said Lucas Presson, general manager of Arrow Digital. “It’s a vital component in what separates good teams and great ones. Mike Matheny has showed important leadership qualities as a player, youth sports champion, and now as the manager of the St. Louis Cardinals. This will be a wonderful night to hear his insight, which we believe will inspire students and the community.”
