Melvin Van de Ven of Cape Girardeau, Mo., and Mike Van de Ven of Plano, Texas, have given $10,000 to establish the scholarship. Their gifts will be matched with an additional $10,000 through a University matching gift program.
The matching gift program is part of the Honoring Tradition – Inspiring Success Comprehensive Campaign through the Southeast Missouri University Foundation. This program allowed donors to make a minimum commitment of $5,000 to a maximum commitment of $10,000 through donation or pledge by March 1, 2014, that qualified for a $1-for-$1 match. The goal of the Campaign is to raise $40 million for student scholarships, academic programs and renovations that benefit students both today and tomorrow.
The renewable Melvin J. Van de Ven, CPA, CVA Endowed Scholarship will be awarded to a student with a minimum 2.5 grade point average who is currently enrolled at the University. The recipient will be a student in the Department of Accounting. The scholarship will be awarded to a student with a dedicated major in accounting, with preference to students from Bollinger or Cape Girardeau counties in Missouri. The Department of Accounting will select the recipient.
Melvin J. Van de Ven, graduated from Leopold High School in Leopold, Mo., in 1955, and is a 1964 graduate of Southeast with a major in accounting. Van de Ven was awarded a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certificate by the Missouri State Board of Accountancy in 1968. He attained the Certified Valuation Analyst (CVA) accreditation upon completion of training from the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts in 1997.
His practice of public accounting has been continuous since graduation in 1964. Most recently he has been the managing partner of Van de Ven, LLC, Certified Public Accountants and Business Advisors, in Cape Girardeau.
