Southeast Missouri State University and Three Rivers Community College have announced a plan of study to offer students the off-campus opportunity to complete a degree in Middle School Teacher Education at the area higher education centers in Malden and Kennett and on the Three Rivers campus in Poplar Bluff, Mo.
The plan of study, which will be available beginning in August, will lead to a bachelor of science degree in middle school education and teacher certification in grades 5-9 from Southeast. This will be the first time a course of study leading to a degree in middle school teacher certification has been offered off-campus. All courses will be available at the higher education centers in Malden and Kennett, and at Three Rivers, and required fieldwork will be in local area schools.
“Students can enroll in this four-year course of study close to their homes, which makes it convenient for them to obtain this degree,” said Dr. Rick Hux, director of the Crisp Bootheel Education Center in Malden, Mo. A series of informational meetings are planned at the area higher education centers, beginning later this month. Meeting times and locations are as follows:
- Crisp Bootheel Education Center in Malden: Tuesday, March 30, 6:30 p.m.
- Three Rivers Community College in Poplar Bluff: Tuesday, June 22, 6:30 p.m.
- Kennett Area Higher Education Center: Tuesday, July 13, 6:30 p.m.
- Crisp Bootheel Education Center in Malden: Tuesday, Aug. 3, 6:30 p.m.
Officials say the program will be available in August for students who are just beginning their college studies. The program will begin in spring 2005 for those students ready to enter the Southeast Middle School Block II program.
Officials say they hope to enroll students with diverse educational backgrounds – from those with no college hours through those with degrees. Students who have already completed various amounts of college may complete the program in less than four years.
