Missouri Department of Revenue Changes State Tax Tables for 2019

During the 2018 federal legislative session, the U.S. Congress passed House Bill 2540 which will result in federal tax withholding changes effective with tax year 2019. This change means federal income tax withholdings, that taxpayers may claim, will be prorated based on the taxpayer’s federal adjusted gross income. Consequently, the Missouri Department of Revenue has elected to remove the federal tax deduction from the Missouri withholding tax calculation. This change may result in a small increase to the amount withheld from each employee’s paycheck.

In addition, all allowances, including self and dependents, have been removed from the Missouri tax withholding tables. Consequently, employees can no longer increase or decrease the amount withheld from their paychecks by claiming allowances that are inconsistent with their specific filing situation, such as claiming three allowances when filing status is single. Employees previously electing allowances will automatically see their 2019 withholding solely based on their filing status. The new 2019 MO W-4 Form does allow employees to increase or reduce withholding amounts by entering a dollar amount. Employees may want to evaluate their current withholdings and complete a revised 2019 MO W-4 Form if they want to revise withholding amounts.
