Aug. 27, 2009 – The Southeast Missouri Music Academy at Southeast Missouri State University is offering new Beginning Guitar Classes this fall for children and adults.

Patrick Rafferty will teach three classes starting in mid-September.  The class for grades 5-8 begins Monday, Sept. 21 at 6 p.m. A class for grades 9-12 begins Monday, Sept. 21, at 7 p.m.  The adult class starts on Thursday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. Both classes will be held in Room 1 of Brandt Hall of Music. All classes meet weekly for 12 weeks, and tuition is $150. Students need to bring a footstool and an acoustic instrument of suitable size.  A nylon-string guitar is best for this class.  Students also should obtain a copy of Classic Guitar Technique, Vol. 1 by Aaron Shearer.  It is published by Alfred and is available at Shivelbine’s. The class will provide beginning guitarists with fundamental skills and techniques.  Students will learn proper seating and hand positions, develop finger independence, and learn to read standard notation for both traditional and contemporary/popular guitar music. The deadline to enroll is Sept. 11.
