Nearly 700 Area Students to Compete in 37th Annual Math Field Day


2009_SM_Mathematics003-LCAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., April 7, 2014 – The Southeast Missouri State University Department of Mathematics will host students from 28 area junior and senior high schools to compete in the 37th annual Math Field Day Tuesday, April 8, in the Show Me Center.

The event will begin at 9 a.m. and conclude with an awards ceremony at 1 p.m. Team events will begin at 9:30 a.m., while individual testing will be held from 10-11:30 a.m. At noon, student teams will compete in a scholar bowl type event, Mathletics. Spectators are welcome to watch the teams from various schools as they compete to correctly answer a variety of mathematics problems, which will be viewable on a video screen. Tests are graded by faculty members in the Department of Mathematics.

The top three students will receive medals in the 23 individual events. The top three schools will receive plaques and certificates in the five team events as well as trophies in Mathletics. The best overall school will receive a Sigma Award trophy.

Approximately 693 students will compete in a multitude of areas, including algebra I, algebra II, geometry, trigonometry, word problems, sets and logic, exponential and log functions, matrices and determinants, computational mathematics, elementary data analysis, probability, mental arithmetic, non-routine problem solving, analytic geometry, number bases, number theory, hand calculators and calculus.

Area schools competing in this year’s contest are Anna-Jonesboro, Arcadia Valley, Bell City, Bernie, Campbell, Cape Central, Caruthersville, Cobden, Eagle Ridge Christian School, Farmington, Hayti, Herrin, Leopold R-III, Malden, Massac County High School, Nashville Community High School, North St. Francois County R-I, Notre Dame Regional High School, Oak Ridge R-VI, Poplar Bluff, Puxico, Richland R-I, Saxony Lutheran School, Scott City R-I, Ste. Genevieve, The Christian Academy, Viburnum C-4 and Woodland High School.
