New Desktop Phone Deployment Begins This Week

In preparation for the upcoming transition to the new phone system in early April, Information Technology (IT) is beginning to install new IP desktop phones this week. IT will contact departments ahead of time to schedule the installation.

You will continue to use your old phones as normal for all business-related calls until IT is ready to cutover to the new system. When the new phone is installed at your workstation, it will be configured with your existing extension, but its operation will be limited to only calling other IP phones on campus and should only be used for testing purposes. Instructions will be left on how to set up your new voicemail box (your old mailbox and messages will not be transferred over). Once all phones have been deployed and the system has been tested, IT will select an after-hours cutover time and announce it in the Newswire.

A desktop application, which allows calls to be made from your computer, will be available for all currently active extensions. More information on how to get this installed and how to use it will be announced at a future date.

IT will be offering several training workshops if you would like to learn more about the features of the new phone system. Beginning today, March 10, a Telecommunications staff member will be available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 2-4 p.m. (other times can be arranged if needed) in the IT conference room located in GS1 Room 203 where anyone can drop by and ask questions or see how the phones work.
