Payne is majoring in elementary education. The SAHEC General Scholarship is a $1,150 award designed to assist with college expenses.
“I was thrilled to receive the scholarship,” Payne said. “Without it, I would not be able to continue my education. Now, I can enroll in 15 hours at SAHEC.”
Judy Buck, director of SAHEC, said, “Sherri is one of the typical non-traditional students SAHEC strives to serve. She is the type of student this scholarship was set up for because she maintains a good G.P.A., is highly motivated and serves as an excellent role model for other non-traditional students.”
Payne is entering her third year at SAHEC. She was named to the Dean’s List for the spring 2005 semester. She says she is dedicated to her education, adding she always attends class to demonstrate to her two daughters that dreams can come true through hard work and perseverance.
“People don’t always understand how much it means to receive this kind of help,” Payne said. “Scholarship money is sometimes the only way a person can afford going to college.” Payne also works at least 30 hours a week for her husband’s business. She says the scholarship funds help compensate for the time she misses at work while taking day courses.
“Receiving this scholarship has been a blessing for my family,” Payne said. “It is a dream come true for me to be able to continue my education and reach my goals.”
Proceeds from SAHEC’s first scholarship dinner were used to fund the scholarship, which is open to all full-time SAHEC students who maintain a minimum 2.0 grade point average. Interested students must complete an application and submit a letter stating why they should qualify for the scholarship. The scholarship is one of seven active scholarships available to SAHEC students.
